Beach Blanket Baptism

Sister KrisTall Mighty and I were approached by George Chakoutis while at Skintight regarding throwing a benefit on July 23rd to Ramrod in finding a worthy recipient of proceeds from a raffle of two airline tickets to Miami donated by 5 Star Travel. We immediately recognized the Boston Living Center as a such an organization and the event took off. Quickly dubbed Beach Blanket Baptism, NSr Sandra Musique put her seemingly limitless graphics skills to job of coming up with a flyer which was distributed via Facebook, the Boston Living Center’s distribution list, the Ramrod website, and all over the Ramrod floor.

It was decided that in addition to the raffle, there would be a speedo/hot body contest. I partnered with Mr. NE Rubber, Richard Nordin, to drum up hot and willing contestants for that portion of the evening. For the raffle, Sr. Eunice pulled some beach-themed skin care products from work which were put into cute little plastic beach pails as prizes along with some Manhunt videos and other swag. George at Ramrod augmented the prizes with three Bacardi party pails, and a golf bag which had been donated by Grey Goose. For the bathing suit contest, he supplied three bottles of high-end tequila and a large beach radio. (initially cash prizes were promised, but who’s to complain?) George also supplied a $50 bank to get the raffle rolling.

NSr. Sandra went one step further by creating a flyer based on BP’s logo which was taped to Ramrod’s many oilcans and translated into stickers which could be distributed during the party.

NSr’s Sandra, Ima, and Pure, and Aspirant Bimea manifested at the convent where they were joined by Sr Eunice and NSr Imogen before proceeding to Ramrod on foot where they met up with me. A note for any future events at Ramrod: A Red Sox game made any parking at the event extremely difficult to find.

Despite a slow start, the evening was a rousing success. After a focusing moment over smart cocktails, the nuns worked the rooms (upstairs and down) offering raffle tickets and rousing up contestants for the bathing suit contest. At 12:30, a total of 8 contestants stripped down for the audience’s pleasure and were judged by Sr. Eunice, Marc Davino from BLC, Paul from 5 Star Travel, and special guest judge Vienna Marriott, reigning Empress of the RI Imperial Court who wisely suggested an impromptu talent portion after narrowing down the top 4. For future events, I feel this portion could have been better thought out with a little more time speaking with each contestant, but it moved right along and the audience didn’t wander.

The raffle itself was called at approximately 1:25 with $503 raised to benefit the BLC. The nuns departed Ramrod to deface at the convent or took a cab directly home at approximately 1:40.

Some food for thought for upcoming events: We lucked out with all the swag from Ramrod. We should look into getting our own connections with liquor companies to sponsor us for future events. Also, when we get a links section up and running on the website, we really need to include 5 Star for everything they did.

Submitted with much love,
